The first major step in coordinating your website build is getting a domain name.  However, you don't want just any domain name.  Most businesses want their business name as the domain name; but what if you do a search for it and it's already taken... what if other forms of it are taken as well?  There's always the option of purchasing the domain name from the person who currently owns it.  However, usually they will only sell it for a large sum of money, which usually makes it not worth it to you.

So, then what do you do?  You need to choose a name for your company's domain name that people are going to remember easily.  Longer domain names are harder to remember than shorter ones.  Also, names that are catchy are easier to remember also.  It should definitely have something to do with your business.  If you can't get your domain name to be your business name then if you are a sole proprietor, make it YOUR name (first and last) and if you're a company with employees, make it something that has to do with your business.

For example, let's say Hal owns an icecream parlor... the name of his company is Hal's Icecream Parlor.  Hal is building a website and wants to have the name of his company as his domain name.  However, when he does a search, someone already has Halsicreamparlor.com.  So instead he might use, Halsicecreamshop.com or halsicecream.com.  Maybe even Hals.com.  Why not?  It's easy to remember!

One thing I must add before I continue is that you need to stay away from using .net or any other extension besides .com.  The reason for this is that .com is the most common domain extension used on the internet and no one is going to remember that yours is .net.  If they don't remember it, and they type in yourdomainname.com instead, they will get someone elses website or an error in their browser.

To wrap up, when choosing a domain name:

-- Don't use long names, it will be harder to remember.
-- Think of a name that is easy to remember.
-- Use a catchy name.
-- It should have something to do with your business.
-- If you can't get your companies name, use YOUR name or use one that tells about what your company does.
